What is an intimacy coordinator?

Ever since the “me too“ movement, the need for a clear process to filming intimate scenes has become more and more apparent. The power dynamics inherent to life on set and the delicate nature of nudity and simulated sex called for a dedicated professional figure to handle the complexity.

There are many ways an IC can help your set run smoothly

They facilitate dialogue between director and performers around boundaries and comfort level and safeguard those boundaries during filming
They ensure the application of best practices and protocols for the filming of intimate scenes, guaranteeing a safe working environment for both cast and crew
They can coordinate with different department to ensure performers have the appropriate costumes, modesty garments and prosthetics
Upon director’s request, they can help choreograph movement for simulated sex
Depending on their background they can consult on unconventional practices, cooperate closely with stunts for scenes of simulated sexual violence, offer specific support when working with minors.
